את איאד אנחנו מכירות הרבה שנים. נולד בעיר העתיקה וגדל בשועפט ועבר למחנה הפליטים קלנדיה ופגש את בת זוגו לחיים תושבת ירושליים מאסאווייה ונולדו להם ילדים וחיו יחד, ואנחנו מלוות בתוך הזמן שאנחנו מכירות אותו את הנסיון שלו לקבל אישור לאיחוד לאיחוד משפחות, ואיך כוחות הכיבוש מתנים את זה בשיתוף פעולה, ואת האיומים על בת זוגו, כדי שיבגוד, ואת ההתעמרויות הלא חדלות, ואת הבסטה שהוא בונה, על אדמתו, ושוב ושוב הורסים לו אותה, כי הוא פלסטיני ויש מגמה למנוע מפלסטינים לעבוד, וכי לחיילים מותר, וכי להתעלל זו מטרה ולא תוצאה, וכי זה איאד שכל הזמן אומר להם לא....

Once again, they've destroyed Eyad's stand. They're trying to pressure him again to collaborate, and again Eyad has refused.

We've known Eyad for years. Born in the Old City of Jerusalem, he grew up in Shua'far and moved to Qalandiya refugee camp, then he met his life partner, a Jerusalem resident from Issawiya. They have had children and lived together, and in the time we have known him, we have witnessed his attempts to get authorization for family reunification, and how the Occupation forces condition this with collaboration. We witness their threats against his life partner, and how he has become 'security-prevented' from entering Israel in the attempt to pressure him. We see the stand he puts up on his land, which is ruined again and again because he is Palestinian and the policy is to prevent Palestinians from working and making a living, and because the soldiers are allowed to destroy it, and because harassment is a goal, and because Eyad keeps saying no...

אפריל 2009. פגשנו את אנואר, אחיו של מחמוד עוואד שסיפר לנו שהדיבור של מחמוד לצערם עדיין כבד. ושביד ימין הוא לא יכול להחזיק אפילו עיפרון או סיגריה. ושביד שמאל יש נימול. שבסוף לא עבר את סדרת הטיפולים לשם שיקום ברמאללה. לא התפנה מקום לשם כך בבית החולים. הם עדיין מקווים שהצבא ישא באחריות ובהוצאות ויאפשר לו להגיע לבית חולים בישראל לשם השלמת הטיפול והשיקום.
אנואר סיפר שנעים אחיהם הבכור, נלקח לא מזמן למתקן הכליאה בחווארה על ידי החיילים שאמרו לו שהוא מבוקש. נאמר להם שהוא יואשם בחברות בחזית העממית ובסחר בנשק. אנחנו שואלות את עצמנו אם יש למעצרו של נעים, דווקא עכשיו, קשר לזה שהמשפחה עדיין מאמינה, מצפה ותובעת באמצעות עורך דין, שהצבא יקח אחריות על הפגיעה הקשה בבנם מחמוד.

April 2009. We met Anwar, Mahmoud Awad's brother, and he told us that unfortunately Mahmoud's speech is still faltering, and that his right hand cannot even hold a pencil or cigarette, and that he senses constant tingling in his left hand. That he has not received the series of rehabilitation treatments he was supposed to in Ramallah, there has not been a vacancy at the hospital there. They are still hoping that the army will accept its responsibility and cover the expenses, and enable him to access hospital in Israel in order to complete his treatment and recovery.
Anwar told us that their older brother Naim was taken to Huwara Detention Center by the soldiers who told him he was on the wanted listl. They have been informed that he will be accused of membership in the Popular Front and of arms trade. We are wondering whether Naim's arrest now, at this time, is related to the family's expectations and demands - through an attorney - that the army be accountable for Mahmoud's serious conditon.

מחמוד עוואד, בן העשרים ושש, שחייל במחסום חווארה בשם יצחק ניפץ את גולגלתו בקת הרובה שלו, ב 20 בינואר 2009, חזר הביתה.
הוא גר עם אביו ואימו ומשפחתו המורחבת בכפר סאלם שליד שכם.
החייל שבר למחמוד את הגולגולת וגרם לנזק שקשה לאמוד בשלב הזה.
זה שהוא חי והולך ומדבר מעט הוא שמחה גדולה לכולם, והוא גם נראה טוב, אבל אין לו תחושה בכל צידו הימני, הוא מתקשה לאחוז דברים ולדבר, והכל מעורר דאגה גדולה.
הרופאים השאירו את הגולגולת פתוחה כי עדיין יש שם דימום, שאם יעבור, ינותח בעוד כמה חודשים שוב, ויסגרו את גולגולתו. מחמוד מתחיל עכשיו בסדרות של טיפולים בנסיון לשפר את מצבו ולבינתיים קרוב משפחה מלווה את מחמוד בכל צעדיו.
עם משפחה כל כך תומכת וחמה כמו שלו אנחנו מקוות שמחמוד יחזור בקרוב לעצמו, כמה שאפשר.

26-year-old Mahmoud Awad, whose skull the soldier, Itzhak, shattered with his rifle butt at Huwara Checkpoint on January 20th, 2009, is now back home, in the village of Salem near Nables, where he lives with his parents and extended family.
The fact that he is alive and walking and even talking a bit, is cause for great joy. He also looks well; but he has no sensation in the entire right side of his body, and difficulty in holding things and speaking.
This is cause for grave concern.
Izhak, the soldier, has fractured Mahmoud's skull and caused him damage, hard to assess at this point.
The doctors have left his skull open, for there is still some hemorrhaging. In a few months, when it stops, he will be operated on again and his skull will be sealed. Meanwhile,Mahmoud has begun a series of treatments in an attempt to improve his condition, and a family member must accompany him at every step.
With a warm supportive family such as his, we hope that Mahmoud will soon be himself again, as much as possible.

איוב בן העשרים ואחת, שיושב הפעם במאסר כבר מעל שנה וחצי לאחר שנשפט לחמש שנים, מופיע ברשימת העומדים להשתחרר בקרוב מהכלא יחד עם אסירים פלסטינים נוספים במסגרת הסכם כלשהו בין הרשות לישראל. זה מאסרו השלישי של איוב מאז ירו בו חיילי הכיבוש כדור בירך באחת הפלישות שלהם למחנה הפליטים קלנדיה כשהיה בן שש עשרה.
ניבאל אמא של איוב, בישרה לנו בהתרגשות גדולה על השחרור הקרוב, שנודע לה מהאינטרנט. אנחנו מקוות שהוא שמח לחזור הביתה, למחנה הפליטים קלנדיה, מקום שבו חיים אלפי אנשים תחת התעללות יומיומית של הצבא והשב"כ הישראלים.
אם איוב הצעיר עם אישיותו החמה והסוערת, ועם נסיון חייו הקשה עם הכיבוש הישראלי, יצליח איכשהו להתחמק מהתעללות נוספת של חיילי הצבא, ויוכל לטפל במחלת הכליות האורבת בגופו הצעיר כתוצאה מהתעללות של חיילים כשהיה בכלא, אם יניחו לו וירשו לו סוף סוף לגדול כמו שמגיע לו, יש סיכוי שהוא יתפתח לבנאדם מבוגר מעניין ומצויין.

Ayoub, twenty-one years old, in prison for over a year-and-a-half now, after being sentenced to five, appears on the list of those prisoners about to be released soon, along with other Palestinian prisoners, according to one of those agreements reached between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government. This is Ayoub’s third incarceration since the Occupation soldiers shot him in the thigh in one of their incursions into Qalandiya refugee camp when he was sixteen years old.
Nibal, Ayoub’s mother, excitedly told us the good news of his upcoming release, of which she learned through the internet. We hope he is happy to be returning home to Qalandiya refugee camp, where thousands of people live under daily harassment of the Israeli army and Shabak (Security Services).
If young Ayoub - given his warm and excitable nature, and his bitter life experience under the Israeli occupation – somehow manages to avoid further harassment by the soldiers, and gets treated for the kidney disease that has invaded his young body as a result of his sufferings at the hands of the soldiers while imprisoned, if left in peace and allowed to finally grow as he deserves, chances are he will develop into a fascinating, fine adult.

יש רק דרך אחת היא דרך השלום בין שני העמים. לא רק בין שתי ממשלות. אני משוכנע שאם יישבו שני העמים ביחד, אנחנו נגיע להסכם שלום חם וחזק. תמיד אני חולם על שלום. תמיד אם אני חושב על הבטחון של הילדים שלי, אני גם חושב על הבטחון שלכם. של הילדים שלכם.
אני נותן לכם את היד שלי למען השלום בין שני העמים.

Faisal wrote and sent us the following:
I am a Palestinian Arab. I was one of the fighters resisting the Israeli Occupation.
I paid a price in my own life for the sake of my people. I was in prison for twelve years, and now I am prepared to pay a lot, but in a different way. There is only one way, and that is the way of peace between the two peoples. Not just between two governments. I am certain that if the two peoples sit together, we would achieve a strong, warm peace treaty. I am always dreaming of peace. I am always thinking about the security of my children, I am also thinking about your own security. And that of your children. I hold out my hand for peace between the two peoples.

סוהייב חזר הביתה, לאבא אבו עומר, לאמא כפאח ולאחיו הקטן נור, אחרי חצי שנה של מעצר מנהלי. שום הסבר לא ניתן על ידי העוצרים, ושום הצדקה לא קיימת להענשת השווא ולבזבוז החודשים הרבים של הנער בן השבע עשרה.

Suhayeb is back home, with his father Abu Omar, mother Kifah and little brother Nur, after half a year of administrative detention. No explanation has been offered by his jailers, and no justification exists for this vain punishment and many wasted months of this seventeen-year old.

איוב נשפט בימים אלה, ודינו נגזר לחמש שנים. ניבאל, אמא של איוב ושל שניים עשר ילדים נוספים,  שבדרכה לנסות לבקרו בחודשים הרבים בהם היה עצור עד למשפטו, הוכתה בדרך על ידי חייל באלה, נותחה לאחרונה בראשה ומצבה הבריאותי טוב הרבה יותר. מצבה הנפשי אחרי מתן גזר דינו של בנה, ממש לא טוב.

Ayoub has just been sentenced to five years in prison. Nibal, mother of Ayoub and twelve other children, on her way to attempt to visit him during the many months he was held in detention until his trial, was clubbed by a soldier. She has undergone head surgery lately and her physical health is much better. However, after hearing about her son's verdict, she has become extremely stressed emotionally.

Nizar and Mu'atassem persist trying to sell coffee at the Huwara Checkpoint, to feed their family. Their mother is often alerted to save them from the soldiers who trash their coffee and equipment, and beat them up.
