מחמוד עוואד, בן העשרים ושש, שחייל במחסום חווארה בשם יצחק ניפץ את גולגלתו בקת הרובה שלו, ב 20 בינואר 2009, חזר הביתה.
הוא גר עם אביו ואימו ומשפחתו המורחבת בכפר סאלם שליד שכם.
החייל שבר למחמוד את הגולגולת וגרם לנזק שקשה לאמוד בשלב הזה.
זה שהוא חי והולך ומדבר מעט הוא שמחה גדולה לכולם, והוא גם נראה טוב, אבל אין לו תחושה בכל צידו הימני, הוא מתקשה לאחוז דברים ולדבר, והכל מעורר דאגה גדולה.
הרופאים השאירו את הגולגולת פתוחה כי עדיין יש שם דימום, שאם יעבור, ינותח בעוד כמה חודשים שוב, ויסגרו את גולגולתו. מחמוד מתחיל עכשיו בסדרות של טיפולים בנסיון לשפר את מצבו ולבינתיים קרוב משפחה מלווה את מחמוד בכל צעדיו.
עם משפחה כל כך תומכת וחמה כמו שלו אנחנו מקוות שמחמוד יחזור בקרוב לעצמו, כמה שאפשר.

26-year old Mahmoud Awad, whose skull was partially shattered by a soldier at Huwara Checkpoint with his rifle butt on January 20th 2009, is now back home.
He lives with his parents and extended family in the village of Salem, near Nablus.
The soldier fractured Mahmoud's skull and caused him damage that is still hard to assess at this point.
The fact that he is alive and walking and even talking a bit is cause for everyone's great joy. He also looks fine, but has no sensation in the entire right side of his body, has difficulty holding things and speaking, and this is cause for grave concern.
The doctors have left his skull open for there is still some hemorrhaging. When this will stop, he will be operated again in a few months and his skull will be sealed. Now Mahmoud begins a series of treatments in an attempt to improve his condition, and for the time being, a family member accompanies him at every step.
With a supportive, warm family such as his own, we hope that Mahmoud will soon be himself again, as completely as possible.
